The Tale of Kāveh¹ the Blacksmith

I am the voice of Kāveh the Blacksmith.

The rage of hammer is upon the metal of my fiery heart.

I am the blood’s uprising against the tyrant.

I am the gaze of the woebegone peasant.

I am those fists which art clenched aloft.

I am the uproar ‘tween hemlock’s heart.

I am revolt against oppressive tyranny.

I am the moment thou waketh up from nihility.

Behold! For now I have come with blood and fury.

Spears of righteousness art in the hands of insanity.

Behold! For now it shalt be the time for us to meet.

Thou art immersed in silence, and righteousness immovably resolute.

Ye, inimical Zahhāk! Death shalt be to thee!

Behold the rage of Kāveh which is to enflame tyranny.

Ye, Zahhāk, we shalt have peace hereafter,

As the world is taken over by righteousness and laughter.

 Kāveh the Blacksmith is a 5000-year-old figure of Iranian mythology who led a popular uprising against a ruthless ruler named, Zahhāk, also known as Zahhāk the Snake-shouldered. The tale is narrated in Shahnameh, the national epic of Iran, which is composed by 10th-century Persian poet, Ferdowsi.
